We have all seen the commercials and the billboards. We should all know that driving impaired is dangerous for everyone in and around the roadways. Unfortunately, we know that it still happens.

Here are the facts about vehicle crashes in Ohio. For the latest reporting year, we know that there were over 1,000 traffic crash fatalities and nearly 19,000 injuries.

What we really need to focus on are the numbers provided by the state highway patrol.

• 405 of the total traffic fatalities were the result of what is called “operating a vehicle impaired” or OVI.
• It is not only vehicle passengers that suffer, but also pedestrians, bicyclists, and other parties.

Think about that number for a minute. Of all the traffic fatalities, driving impaired is an overwhelming cause of total deaths.

Those who survive crashes caused by impaired drivers are often left facing major injuries. It is not uncommon for us to see the following after these incidents:

• Spinal cord injuries (with possible paralysis)
• Traumatic brain injuries
• Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
• Broken or dislocated bones
• Severe lacerations or amputations

Not only do these injuries require immediate medical care, but many of them can cause temporary or permanent disabilities to their victims. Those who are injured and their families will suffer major costs aside from the medical bills. If a victim cannot work while they recover, or is never able to return to work, they will lose the income they need to support their family.
