What does this abuse look like?

Physical Abuse of any kind. This includes staff or volunteers slapping, punching, shoving, pushing, burning, or any other act that intentionally causes harm to an elderly person.

Sexual Abuse is an abhorrent form of physical abuse and includes any sexual encounter between an elderly resident with staff at a nursing home.

Emotional or Psychological Abuse is both verbal and nonverbal and can inflict serious distress and mental pain in the elderly. This abuse can take the form of name-calling, intimidation, isolation, property destruction, and more.

Neglect occurs when a person’s basic needs of food, water, hygiene, clothing, and medical needs are not met by nursing home staff.

Financial Abuse can occur when staff at a nursing home has access to a resident’s financial and personal information and uses it for their own benefit.

If you suspect that a loved one is being abused or neglected, remove them from the situation as quickly as possible and contact law enforcement. Please be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of abuse. This can include unexplained marks, bruises, cuts, scrapes. It can also be indicated in changes n behavior of your loved one, including mood swings, withdrawn behavior, or changes in appetite.
