Driving has risks. That is not a surprise to anyone. However, nobody should ever have to worry about getting injured due to the careless or negligent actions of other drivers on the roadway. At Paulozzi LPA, our knowledgeable and experienced team understands that you may need help securing compensation after a car accident. We can handle your case. Today, our Cleveland car accident attorneys want to discuss a tragic case that took the life of a young woman, the girlfriend of a Cleveland Browns star.

What happened in this case?

On the morning of Sept 11, 2019, Cleveland Browns defensive end Chris Smith and his girlfriend were driving in his Lamborghini when they were forced to pull over due to a blown tire. The incident caused the car to veer left and hit the median. His girlfriend, Petara Cordero, did not suffer significant injuries in the tire blowout and got out of the vehicle.

A short time later, a woman driving a 2017 Mazda 3 hit the passenger side of Smith’s vehicle and Cordero, who was standing on the shoulder of the road at the time. Paramedics rushed Cordero to the hospital, but she died from her injuries.

The driver of the Mazda was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries. She admitted that she had been drinking and police are awaiting toxicology reports.

Brown’s team owners released a statement that said, “Words cannot describe the sorry we feel for Chris following the loss of his girlfriend, Petara. Our entire organization mourns with Chris, his family and the Cordero family.”

These incidents are not uncommon

When we look at the latest reporting year for Ohio, we can see that there were:

  • 1,094 traffic-crash fatalities
  • 18,832 traffic-crash injuries

Out of those incidents, impaired drivers were responsible for 405 deaths. That is a tremendous percentage of the overall fatalities. Alcohol-impaired drivers are much more likely to cause death or serious injuries in an accident. It is not uncommon for our Cleveland car accident attorneys to see the following after an alcohol-involved crash:
